TT, reality is that there really aren't any homeruns for the SLC. It's hard to even find base hit. It's mostly a collections of walks and errors...but they are all seemingly in the same general group. So while HBU is a stretch, they are a warm body IN D1...something the SLC might need. And the discussions of HBU football puts an even prettier dress on them, even if they are playing all their sports on prison quality fields and courts.

Gotta think the potential future of desperation are why there are some fans talking about a SWAC merger. I sure hope things never get that bad.

Last June if you told any of us the WAC was gonna add UTA, Seattle, Texas St., UTSA while looking at UVU, CSUB, and Lamar. We'd say you're high. SLC is getting raided the same way and they are a lower level conf.

Also the rule of having 7 core members to be conf. Core=8 year as a full D-I member not including the provisional years. UCA isn't a core member yet. So if the WAC takes Lamar and SHSU. SLC has 7 members w/ only 6 core, meaning they'd have to take a core member. UTPA would have to be their option. Unless someone leaves the SWAC. I can't see the HBCU's leaving to save the SLC but I could be wrong. HBU won't even start their 8 year process to core membership until they're done w/ provisional status. However they are further along than any D-II. But yes I would rate all 3 D-II schools ahead of HBU and HBU ahead of UTPA.

Exactly, as for why UTPA seems like the "gimme". Just add them for stability right away...assuming the SLC can't entice any Summit members. Highly doubt UALR would give it any consideration with all the question marks now. But who knows, if the right proposal were made (X number of schools saying they'll stay no matter what), maybe there are Summit members like ORU would would take a look. Not so much right now though.

But if the SLC wants to sponsor football, then all of a sudden HBU comes into the picture simple for having a team. Figure if it means they are team #6, they could be in Alaska and first year out of the NAIA and the SLC would want that warm body.

I personally like the D2 schools upgrading as the top option. It's the timing that is the issue...and if the SLC dipped below the core member numbers. But then again, we're talking the SLC: it's not like if they lost their NCAA autobid for say basketball, that anyone would notice ;) Sorry TT. But there is always room for a new play-in/15/16 seed which is what the SLC gets for hoops ;)

The Southland inviting UALR may enable the Sun Belt to add two of their schools - right now with the Sun Belt stuck at 10/11, it lowers the incentive for the Sun Belt to expand. Right now the Sun Belt claims to have no interest in FCS programs, but you never know what circumstances might cause them to sing a different tune. Adding UTPA and Houston Baptist would get the league back up to 7/11 (8/11 once HBU starts football), and then adding Oral Roberts would get the league up to 7/12 or 8/12.

If North Alabama wants to join for all sports, the Southland should take a long hard look at Lipscomb. Nashville and Florence (Huntsville TV market) aren't that far from each other, and neither is that far from Central Arkansas.

UNA and NKU will likely have OVC invites in a month or so. The SBC didn't even want App St. this go around, the sure wouldn't take SLC schools. They might convince the Texas Twins to join if they do okay in the WAC for a couple of years. Charlotte could settle SBC's 10/11 problem in a few years. SBC could add App St. for all sports and Charlotte for fb only, 12/12.

Evidently - HBU will not be ready anytime soon to move in to the Southland or Summit League. Upgrading Sharp Gym is not immediate, but "intermediate" at best.

The lights is a nice step forward, but the school continues to have a long way to go. Doubt the Summit League has any interest for many of the reasons the Southland does not. HBU needs to pray that the dominoes lead to more SLC defections... because as it stands, not enough have fallen...

Quote:
"Our biggest challenge is that we need to bring our facilities up to par with other Division I institutions,” Moniaci said. “The facilities we have serve us very well, but … we’ve got to catch up in that area.”

HBU president Robert B. Sloan Jr. said the university’s immediate plan is to add lighting to its baseball and softball fields. He also said the school is engaged in intermediate-to-long term planning for funding and construction of a special events center that would replace 47-year-old Sharp Gym, which is home to the Huskies men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

UNA may want to get their ducks in a row...

Dave Schmidt seems to have a finger on the problems the institution faces and the concerns of the OVC in extending an official invite.

Dave is the one that told me that UNA will likely get invited in Sept.

Dave also posted publicly after the September bit that remarks by UNA's President had gotten back to the OVC... and I told him that what he stated was consistent with what I have heard and reiterated several times on AGS... show me the $$$!

This is what I was referring to... no one is listening, but Schmidt is on his game...

(7-25-11) - According to my contact on Friday, OVC AD meetings are today and tomorrow and he thinks UNA and NKU will get tabled until Sept, but both schools were asked to submit membership proposal and both institutions did submit. He told me it will definitely happen for NKU, UNA ...could be interesting there were comments made by Dr. Cale at the GSC Awards Banquet that have reached back to the OVC, but the press did not pick up on.
