And Jon, I'm of the mindset that Pac12 expansion is best if it can do what they wanted to do 20 years ago: Colorado and Texas. The move last year was to do just that: easily get Colorado, but get Texas at whatever cost...even with 4 of their "pals". But the Pac-10 also knew that when they brought in Colorado, that it meant potentially having to settle on Utah. So in the end, the Pac-12 became what everyone has expected it be like for the past 6 years or so.

Now this time around, it's a bit different. The Pac-12 knows that if the field opens up and there are pushes to 14 or 16 by the other schools, it is the Pac-12 that is in the worst spot of the Power4 BCS conferences. SEC has B12, BE and even aCC to chose from. Big Ten has the same 3. ACC has any Big East school they want, probably not any Big 12 because of the strange geography (is ACC expansion to the plains states worth it for Kansas? No. Oklahoma, sure). But for the Pac-12, they have only the Big 12, MWC and WAC. That ain't pretty compared to the other power conferences.

So in the end, staying at 12 definitely makes for a better conference. The problem is the future alone. Bring in Oklahoma/OSU, you build the bridge the the region beyond Colorado. Adn maybe, just maybe, one day Texas makes the move. But if everyone else is at 14 or 16 (B10, SEC, ACC), Oklahoma is the best you can do if texas passes.

Would be so much easier if New MExico was some sort of Boise St. type powerhouse.

Of course, the Pac-12 (as it is now called) should have a backup plan in case the Big 12 school still say "no".

In a few years, Boise State might be a good addition, and Colorado State could give CU another rival.

The back up plan is to do nothing.

Boise and CSU no shot at the Pac-12. NONE. Add little or no value, would cause the average per school to drop.

The SEC, Big 10 and Pac-12 don't NEED to expand. And they won't just take anyone, or expand just to expand. They will expand only if, and when it adds value to the existing schools.

The announcers at the Mizzou - ASU game last night on ESPN talked briefly with Larry Scott (who was at the game).

The gist of his comments was that he would not rule anything out, but you got the impression he was less than enthusiastic about expanding right now.
One comment was that "the ink isn't even dry on our new [PAC-12] logo......"
I was left with the strong opinion that the PAC-12 league office was having conversations, but definitely NOT looking to make the first move.

Good to see a conference being decisive and not dragging things out with expansion.

The ball is back in the Big 12 court to work things out.

Report: Pac-12 could raid Big 12
FOX Sports

Updated Sep 18, 2011 5:20 PM ET
The Pac-12 appears to be working out the final details to bring Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the conference, according to a published report on Sunday.

Nothing has been approved yet, but the deal would allow the Longhorns to keep their new cable TV network, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

A high-ranking administrator at one of the four Big 12 schools told the paper, "It's heating up. We’re trying to move in that direction (of joining the Pac-12)."

When asked about terms of the proposal, the administrator said, "We can live with it."

Another one of the newspaper's sources close to the situation said it's expected that the Texas Board of Regents will vote Monday to authorize Bill Powers, the school's president, to make a decision.

For football, the conference would be aligned into four four-team pods, with one consisting of the Big 12 newcomers. Teams would play the other members of their pod every year and then rotate through the remaining schools to fill out their conference schedule.

It is believed the championship game would be decided by overall conference record over a likely nine-game schedule.

Powers and ADs DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky were in Los Angeles on Saturday to watch Texas beat UCLA, 49-20. They did not meet in person with Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott, a source told the newspaper.

Texas would be able to keep all of the revenue from its new cable network if that amount is greater than one-sixteenth of what the entire Pac-12 receives for its third-tier rights.

Otherwise, the members would divide the revenue evenly, the newspaper's source said. Texas would add conference content to the cable network.

AAS link to original...sorry guys been busy with this and the freaking cowgirls....

Sound like what I said a while ago is coming true their will be an OU/OSU/Tech network (to help get them in DFW/Hou) with the LHN providing a landing spot for overflow if they have too many live bball/non rev sport games going on...I was surprised to see they may allow UT to keep ESPN as its carrier and that they can keep the extra money the network provides, but I recently found out that they cut a similar deal with the LA schools to get them to sign away their 3rd tier rights...

Can't find that report saying its a done deal, but I did see the ones on the pods. Sounds like a team will play everyone in its pod and two from each other pod so only 1 trip a year in fb to each pod, and bball would be round robin and play home and home within a teams pod. Obviously the pods will be NW, Cali, AZ/Mtn, TX/OK...it'll work. This allows the Cali schools to keep their in state rivalries, and the TX/OK WA/OR pods to minimize travel, and everyone gets a visit to LA every other year and the bay area in off years, AND to Texas every other year with OK in off years (which is basically just North DFW). The AZ/Mtn schools will have the worst of this alignment having a spread out pod with no established rivalries save AZ/ASU but you can't make everyone happy all the time, and if Colorado didn't see this coming last year then they were naive...

The question (if the previous news is true) is how long tell the 16 team league self destructs. I personally think 14 teams are the max for football conferences. In a 16 team league it's possible that 3 teams can be undefeated. How will they determine who goes to the conference championship game? I think this will eventually cause allot of problems for the BCS and the bowl system.
