Longwood on doorstep of Big South Conference membership?

Longwood University has called a media conference for Monday on the Farmville campus and is expected to officially announce it will join the Big South Conference as its 12th member.

Huge news! So the only independent left is CSUB...

damn, that took long enough. Very cool though. I wish the Big West or WAC would throw CSUB a bone. Or are there 5 Indy schools. The GWC 4 isn't a really conf. even though they think they are. The rule is 7 full member schools.

I'm kind of surprised it won't be Kennesaw State getting the Big South invite, since they will have football and the Big South needs FB schools. They must be okay with KSU being a football-only member.

me too. I bet I have 4 or 5 posts on here thinking that KSU would be the 12th member. Maybe they go to 14 down the road, who knows.

they might not have wanted to be the southern most member of the big south or the current big south members may not have wanted to send non revenue sports into georgia. the big south has a nice layout in the mid atlantic region making travel relatively easy

congrats to longwood!

Official announcement on Longwood:

http://www.longwoodlancers.com/news/201 ... x?path=gen

This seems to be cleaning up the D-1 independents in the East..... NJIT still needs a home.
I'm hoping after the supposedly upcoming MWC / CUSA merger, some WAC teams get invited, and the WAC does it's part to dissolve the Great West and CSU-Bakersfield.

The NCAA move to restrict movement, where no conference invitation exists seems like a good thing in terms of stability.

Well I think UNA deserves to be D-I but they need a home.

CCU sound like they are headed to the CAA. I also hear Liberty could be coming too.

The Big South would likely take Kennesaw State if they lose any football playing schools, as Kennesaw State plans to start play in 2014-if they were going to start one year sooner it would be perfect for the Big South.

North Alabama likely fills Kennesaw's slot in the Atlantic Sun, and their football team would have the option of either the Big South or Southland to offset one of the numerous non-football members between those two conferences.

Atlantic Sun
Northern Kentucky/East Tennessee State
Lipscomb/North Alabama
Mercer/South Carolina Upstate
Jacksonville/North Florida
Stetson/Florida Gulf Coast

If the SoCon lost a school North Alabam or Kennesaw State could sneak in there. Kennesaw State would likely replace Georgia Southern, as not having a school in Georgia would create a sizable hole in the footprint.

Don't you love FCS realignment? So quick, so simple, so logical.

Yeah, we don't have to worry about Fordham being fb only in the Big Sky.
