Since the Big East Raid of 2005, the remaining C-USA/MWC teams have 10 total NCAA MBB bids in six seasons. The A10 has 12 bids in the last four seasons.
Since the formation of the MWC, the A-10 has 31 bids to 25 by the remaining CUSA/MWC group. (And the A-10 has 25 NCAA wins to their 17).
But looking at these numbers give a false sense of competitiveness by the CUSA/MWC group.
#1 - The A-10 played for one auto-bid (and their numbers don't include Charlotte/Saint Louis in C-USA).
The remaining CUSA/MWC merged teams had THREE auto-bids to play for at times (CUSA, MWC; plus the WAC for Fresno/Nevada/Tulsa/Rice/UTEP).
Just going year-by-year at RPI/at-larges, you see five bids earned by the group where they were their tourney champ, got a 12/13 seed when someone else within the CUSA/MWC group won THEIR tournament and had a better RPI.
#2 - Of the at-larges, another four bids came basically because their RPIs were high due to the success of Memphis, SDSU, BYU, etc. Who are gone. (Not to mention another 3 in the OLD C-USA days).
Do UNLV (#48 RPI) and UTEP (12 seed) get at-larges in 2010 without BYU/SDSU and Memphis on their schedules?
Does UAB (#32 RPI) get an at-large in 2006 without playing #4 Memphis THREE TIMES and beating them once?
Does Air Force (#50 RPI) get an at-large in 2005 without wins over BYU and SDSU? Their best win without was #78 in the RPI?
Temple would be moving from a conference that gets three bids every single year to a conference that might not get two.
The MWC/CUSA group has three Sweet 16s since 2000 combined. Xavier has three in the last four seasons. The A-10 has four ELITE EIGHTS in that span and eight Sweet 16s.
Then there's the money. Is the move from the A10/MAC to the CUSA/MWC really that significant financially?
The total CUSA/MWC combined pay out an average of $1.18 mil per school, per year. Those deals were negotiated WITH Boise State, TCU, Houston, Memphis, UCF, and SMU in the leagues.
They're probably getting half that in the A10/MAC now.
But they'd be walking away from at least THIRTY NCAA units accrued over the last few years NCAA appearances/wins, which is probably around $7 million.
Here's what makes the most sense:
CUSA division adds Florida International and Florida Atlantic.
MWC division adds Utah St OR San Jose State
UTEP slides to the MWC
Temple joins the CUSA division for football only.
20 teams in football; 18 in all sports.
MWC: UNLV, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force, UTEP, SJSU/USU, (Hawaii FB only)
CUSA: Marshall, ECU, FIU, FAU, UAB, So Miss, Tulane, Rice, Tulsa (Temple FB only)
