UTSA seems to have an invite to CUSA. It also said that the WAC will be down to 4 fb members. Probably more gone after SBC takes Texas St.

Sounds like a merger too. UTEP heading west. MWC side adds UTEP, USU. CUSA adds UTSA, UNT, FIU. Unsure but sounds like La Tech might get in too, plus 1 more. So is it gonna be 10/12?

With the 10/12 split, does the alliance still hold out hope of Boise and San Diego State changing their minds?
I'm thinking with with no more AQ, if the new Big East TV deal is not what everyone's thinking (minus Boise and SDSU) or if the alliance new TV deal (with Boise and SDSU) is close in dollars, why pay the exist fee?

Also, the alliance wants to have it's own conference semifinals, to play a championship game the NCAA requires that a conference have 12 teams, so doesn't that mean for their plan to work that both side would have to get to 12 meaning 24 teams? Ultimately I think that's what will happen.

Let me state the obvious. First, they stay separate but with a football only alliance so they can collect their exit fees then they merge into one league with divisions in each time zone.

CUSA East- UA-Birmingham, East Carolina, FIU, Marshall, Southern Miss, Tulane
CUSA Central- Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, UTEP, UTSA, Tulsa

MWC Pacific- Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV, San Jose State (San Diego State?)
MWC Mtn- Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State, Wyoming (BoiseState?)

Yes, I realize some of the time zones mix but you get the basic idea to sell to the networks. If Boise and San Diego State don't return then UTEP and UTSA go to the MWC side and CUSA can add Charlotte and Georgia State.

Sean, it makes sense. But there is a lot of red tape. 1st, there are no reports of this being an alliance addition, it's for CUSA. So if utsa to MWC was on the table at all, there would be some info on it.

Then you get to the whole semifinal topic.

Yes, it can happen from a business standpoint. CUSA could have its 12 play a regular season with a championship game. The winner then could play the MWC champ in a bowl game. So it would be a semi final from the CUSA standpoint but in NCAA eyes, totally normal. No no need for any waivers from CUSA.

It gets tricky because the MWC has no real expansion options after usu and SJSu. That's 10. If UTEP can send over, great, it's 11. But it still requires NMSu or Idaho for #12. If they want to save room for SDSU or BSU they can, but it means staying at 10.

And let's face it, the big east, with better markets (new England, ny/nj, Philly, DC and USA for navy, Cincy, Louisville,Phil's, orlando, Tampa, Houston, Dallas...will be a better tv deal than any MWC/CUSA alliance deal.

Why the heck would LA Tech be #12 for C-USA?

Wouldn't Florida Atlantic or holding at 10 and waiting for Charlotte be go FBS a better idea?

West: UTEP, Tulsa, Rice, Texas San Antonio, North Texas, Tulane
East: So Miss, UAB, East Carolina, Marshall, Florida Int'l, Florida Atlantic

Ok, well if UTEP slides over, it's even LESS of a reason to take La Tech.

Take UTSA, UNT, and FIU... and wait on Charlotte to be ready, then go FAU and Charlotte.

LATech should have been in C-USA years ago, and should be a priority program over directional or regional Sun Belt fare. In fact, if UTEP isn't sliding over, I'd tap NMSU. Not much on football, but certainly better for the basketball side of operations.

By geography maybe, but not by "fit" and "what they bring to the conference."

C-USA went all the way to UTEP instead of taking La Tech back in 2003 for the 2005 expansion.

Honestly, staying at 10 and waiting on Charlotte is a better maneuver.

Once you add someone, you can't get rid of them if they don't help you (See: Atlantic 10 and Fordham).
