I could see them wanting both....

Depending on the course of Big XII and maybe ACC expansion, BE could lose a couple.

Say Big XII adds Louisville from BE + 3 from ACC (FSU, Miami, Clemson), ACC adds UConn / Rutgers / Notre Dame (a stretch, I know...)

BE adds BYU and AFA...

East = Temple, Cincy, Memphis, Navy, UCF, USF
West = Houston, SMU, AFA, BYU, Boise St., SDSU

The only thing uglier than the BE hybrid is to overlay a zipper alignment. And of course, the BE "brain trust" is considering just that.
Brain trust in this case reminds me of the scene from Young Frankenstiein, where EYE-GOR (Marty Feldman) charged with obtaining a brain,
gets one labelled "Abby-something...." (Abnormal)

I don't believe they're "holding off" even for a second. They're being told by the programs they've approached they'll see how they survive the summer.

Seems like they were willing to do that for Idaho, but their true intention was that Idaho would give up on FBS and eventually join Big Sky football.

Boise fans are going to be pissed to see conference doors swing wide open for the Fly Boys if/when that occurs. It's either just the years of experience those programs have over Boise and their relationships with other geographically-similar conferences, or just the utter lack of due diligence Boise has put into this move, but Boise clearly isn't the program it thinks it is. And it's showing.

The Big East's plans going forward are somewhat held hostage by Big XII / ACC expansion plans.

Some of that may go down by june 30th.

The BE can finalize plans for 12 or 14 more easily if they know who's still hanging around at that point.

Yeah if they start going 9-3, 8-4 in a tougher conf. like the BE vs the WAC then they'll just be a decent school, that for some reason plays fb in a conf no where near their region. Marshall dominated the MAC, you ever hear about them since moving to CUSA? Me either.

@CBSSports sources project Big East media rights at $60M; less than 1/2 what they turned down last year

The Big East shouldn't choose between BYU and Air Force; they should invite both along with Tulsa. Go to 16 with 8 Western schools and 8 Eastern schools. They could keep it at 8 conference games or boost it to 9 - either way make it to where the western-most schools only have to travel cross country once per year.

East
UConn
Rutgers
Louisville
Cincinnati
USF
UCF
Temple
Navy

West
Memphis
Houston
SMU
Tulsa
BYU
Air Force
Boise St.
San Diego State

First time poster so please don't kill the new guy:

Personally I think it would be prudent for the Big East to hold at 13 members. Should they add a 14th and someone leaves between now and 2015 the league once again must add another. I also am not a fan of adding more western football affiliates because I think San Diego St and Boise St are only in the Big East for the short term. I also don't see anyone out there who is going to add value to the tv contract except BYU and AFA and they aren't interested.

As far as divisions go I would align like this:
East: UConn, Rutgers, Temple, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis
West: USF, UCF, Houston, Southern Methodist, Boise, San Diego St

Navy has always played a national schedule so I would have them spend even years in the East and odd years in the West.

It would mean that each school would host Navy roughly once every 4 years so having Navy come to your place will always have a "special" feel to it

It also keeps the upper south trio, the northeastern trio, and the 3 pairs all together.

I sent the idea to Andrea Adelson over at ESPN and it made one of her blog articles:
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigeast/post/_/id/33349/your-vote-big-east-divisions

Also, if anyone's interested, I run my own alignment blog with all my commentary on all the conference shifting:

Welcome, muskie!

Apparently, Villanova's AD is having some sort of presser/"town hall." One of the Rivals forum board guys is there. Some tidbits:

-Big East likely getting a 14th football-only member by Fall. "Western." (sonuva...)
-Villanova may be a part of the next expansion/defection-filling
-conducted "most comprehensive" upgrade viability study; Big East or bust...mid-major conference not an option
-PPL Park looking good (still), Temple could assist in Lincoln Financial Field access (great, two programs who can't draw!)
-upgrading/renovating basketball arena...looks nice!
-they are not raising big-time money over there (that's a personal observation)

I still get the feeling they won't ultimately upgrade to FBS under the Big East banner. They need to secure the PPL issues, announce, and then do the slow move-up. There is just no way with the way the Big East is imploding that Villanova can name their own terms for their upgrade, and it really looks as though they're spending their resources on basketball and the other sports first. They either don't get it, or don't want it, and I suspect it's the latter.

No suprise, though. That's what the BE does...sue. Perhaps some of it makes for even nicer salaries and distributions to members much in for bb only.

Look forward to future lawsuits against Boise State, SDSU, and whomever else leaves in the future.
Wonder too if they'd sue Navy if they back out before 2015? They gonna sue the military and the federal gov't?
