Word on CSNBBS is that the WAC is looking at Sam Houston State, Lamar, Nicholls State, Stephen F. Austin, and McNeese State:

This could be dicey for the Southland if it came to fruition:

Nicholls State
Northwestern State
Southeastern Louisiana
Central Arkansas
Houston Baptist (scheduled to start football in 2014)
Abilene Christian (transitioning from Division II)
Incarnate Word (transitioning from Division II)
New Orleans (non-football in 2013, barring a miracle, and does UNO still count as an active member of Division I?)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (non-football)
Oral Roberts (non-football)

Kennesaw State (Atlantic Sun) will not begin play until 2014. Mercer and Stetson will play in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League starting in 2013, so those schools are not an option either. North Dakota might be an option if they can leave the Big Sky (which might be more palatable if Montana and Montana State joins the WAC), but that only gets the Southland to five for football in 2013. I'm not sure the NCAA would count ACU and UIW towards eligiblity for an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs in 2013. The Southland might need the WAC to inflict similar damage on the Big South and/or CAA for there to be options for football-only members.

Nicholls St. was/is worrying about having to drop to D-II or merge w/ another La school. McNeese St. would be news to me too.

Hopefully the leaders at those Texas / Louisiana schools carefully study the plight of Idaho and New Mexico State, and JUST SAY NO !!!!

Other than the ability to compete for the title of "Crappiest FBS Team", why would any school ponder a "secure future in the WAC" at this time ?

The Southland Conference concluded a two-day site visit to the University of New Orleans early Thursday afternoon with a press conference...

Southland Confernece has scheduled a teleconference among the member college presidents for this Thursday.

According to SLC Commissioner, agenda includes an option to take a vote on admitting the 3 schools recently visited:
University of New Orleans
Incarnate Word University
Ablene Christian University.

From the various comments in the press, I'm inclined to bet on all 3.

Typically the protocol is that once a campus visit is approved, it's a done deal UNLESS something bizarre surfaces.

If the campus visit was just a courtesy, I think they might have included a trip to UTPA.

My guess is that with both ACU and UIW coming in, either the Southland expects future defections, or wants to schedule the new members in a way that doesn't clobber everyone's RPI before they count as Division I. For basketball, they could do a round-robin with 1 crossover-game; for UIW and ACU that would be against each other, at least initially.
