Again, I don't disagree that VCU and GMU shouldn't join the A-10. An A-10 fan myself, I know these two programs, with Butler, instantly boost the conference to make up for the losses of Temple and Charlotte. They are good fits.

To me, I can't agree with the logic when Charlotte departs a better basketball conference for a bigger, but lesser one. They dumped a ton of money for football, not having played a down, and are going straight into C-USA for all sponsored sports. Why? Why couldn't Charlotte do something like Temple was doing and UMass will soon be doing by putting football into one conference while "protecting" basketball? Or, Richmond, a founding CAA member who parks their football there but puts basketball in the better A-10? Is it because Charlotte was a founding member of C-USA? If the latter is true, then it's here where I come from regarding GMU and VCU. That it's not always about making the right or best decisions for programs or athletes, but out of institutional cooperation, relationships, and history...

...or it's politics. Who knows...maybe the hold-up is nothing about loyalty and everything about pressure from the capitol to stay with each other as much as possible, leaving nobody behind or alone for themselves. This is the same state that kind of forced the ACC to take a pretty unworthy Virginia Tech (at the time, at least). ODU was moving with a fury, only to slow the pace. JMU's been in talks for years without action. Now we have VCU and GMU doing the same? I don't know.

Do you think URI was wrong to move its football out of CAA?

Charlotte had to go, they got to do a rare double jump into a decent conf. Not many schools moving from FCS get to skip playing in the SBC, MAC, WAC. They did. So did ODU. UTSA went to the little guy conf but it died and they found a home in CUSA, however they'll still play 1 year of WAC fb.

If they can't compete and NEC allowed a max of what 45-50 schollies instead of 63, I guess it's the right move or they risk shutting down fb like Hofstra and N'eastern who didn't have that choice because they're full CAA members and couldn't just play NEC fb.

I agree that Charlotte had to make the jump...no choice as it's now or never. And to even get a chance at a more desirable conference, they need to take the first step.

That said, while CUSA is a better conference than the others mentioned and a nice jump from FCS...we must remember that this is not the CUSA we knew. It's not the 1996 CUSA, fresh off it's launch. It's not the CUSA from even last year. It's a CUSA that lost UCF, Houston, SMU and Memphis, replacing those schools with 2 Sun belt schools, 2 WAC schools (one being a new football program with no history), and Charlotte...with FCS (and new program) ODU expected to be the other addition...or MTSU, another SB school as #14.

The CUSA that Charlotte is joining is closer to the Sun Belt of today (or last year) in quality. Still a better spot in CUSA, but not a huge gain.

Yes, but it's still better than the SBC and the MAC. A tier above. Level 1(untouchable) B1G, SEC, PAC Level 2 ACC, B12, Level 3 BE, Level 4 MWC, CUSA, Level 5 MAC, SBC.

In basketball, they downgraded...but, kind of why I used the URI example, it's possible Charlotte wasn't where it was meant to be, and may have been in over their head, competitively speaking. But also like URI football in the CAA, even if you reside in the best conference, but are bleeding to death, maybe you reevaluate your priorities and situation.

Time will tell if Charlotte made the right decision.

With ODU and the potential FCS-playoff thing, I think they saw what kind of momentum they could see with a good team and then potential FBS upgrade, like their conference-mate Villanova. After they won title in '09 came the FBS upgrade talks. They had no problem recruiting for the '10 and '11 seasons...even getting talent away from FBS schools in the North Atlantic. A cool drafting effect.

I'm okay with VCU for #14.

Adding both VCU and Mason for 15 means we need to accept someone for #16 and the candidates are less than the three with Final Four banners in their gyms.

Ok, well, there's nine other schools could join the A-10 that have Final Fours, but Indiana State (1979), Jacksonville (1970), Drake (1969), Wichita State (1965), Loyola CHI (1963), NYU (1960), Bradley (1954), CCNY (1950) and Holy Cross (1948) are a long ways from the former glory.

But replacing Temple and Charlotte with Butler and VCU is a massive win for the A-10. It could be argued the league is better (it's not), but the fact is when you lose members, you're losing your best and replacing them with someone from a lesser league... you're expecting to get worse. To only lose a tiny bit is a win.

VCU's site announcing 1:30 webcast. You know, they were really slow putting this together on their site. 2 hours before the webcast is the notice you get!

Ta-da! Official!

And the A-10 version! And story.

If I missed it above, my apologies.

But VCU is joining for the 2012-2013 season...so they'll be in the A10 this fall.

So, the A-10 plays with 15 for next year.

Not a big deal, since they played 16 conference games and had 3 home/home opponents. Really only two of them (at best) made sense.

Charlotte played GW, Richmond... and Xavier.

So now you'll have your actual rival and a secondary rival home/home and 12 teams once.

Dayon-Xavier
Butler-SLU
Duq-Bona
URI-UMass
Rich-VCU

And it'll be find two extra games among GW, Temple, SJU, LAS, Fordham and one more game for the rest.

This will really make WBB scheduling interesting, since they play everyone once and ONE rival again for 14 games. They'd either have to add one more home/home opponent for 16 or dump the extra rivals for 14.

Butler will join the A10 in 2012, not 2013

So, one year of 16. One shot to blow their record number of bids out of the water.

Too bad Fordham is scheduling way too tough OOC and is gonna kill everyone's RPIs.

I assume you're the same BigE from the A10 basketball forum: http://www.basketballforum.com/atlantic-10-conference/

Sweet. We can talk about those posters behind their backs here!

Indeed. But with VCU and Butler joining, wouldnt' it be more constructive to leave that forum in favor of http://a10talk.com. One is run by A10 fans, one is just some general basketball forum that the A10 fans squatted on since it was an upgrade over the voy forum.
