Maybe conf. commissioner anticipates a possible vote today, and then if there is agreement to invite 1-3 schools,
those schools are quickly informed, formally accept, and then a press conference is arranged for tomorrow or later....

I think the Southland folks have to be at least considering the possibility of New Mexico St falling into their laps. i'd be surprised to see them make a move before NMSU gets their future figured out.

Gotta wonder if NMSU has the ability to provide travel subsidies to the Southland schools in the way Boise and Hawaii will do for the Big West. I'm not entirely sure NMSU has the funding to do that long term. Boise can with their new Big East money and Hawaii can because we'll that's the only team that state has to fund and there are plenty of flights from LAX (or Sacramento) to Oahu. And that's probably still cheaper than the travel they have had in the past.

NMSU's best bet is to push Seattle and Denver into this alliance with the Big Sky. Get some security now and then hope the MWC comes knocking one day.

Las Cruces, NM is very close to the western tip of Texas.

The SLC is rather Texas-centric with schools in LA, AR, OK, and TX.
(OK, to be fair - more eastern Texas-centric)....

NMSU would certainly be the western-most school, but not ridiculously so.
I don't know that they'd feel obligated to offer travel subsidies.

The Texas schools are east Texas. Texas is a big state.

850 miles from Boise to LA, Las Cruces to Houston is just shy of 800 miles. It's very comparable. I'm not sure why everyone thinks the Southland is going to welcome NMSU so easily and that NMSU can treat it as a fall back option.
