American Athletic Conference is new name for former Big East, sources told @ESPN

AAC vs ACC hoping people will mix them up to the benefit of the AAC

Seems kinda D-II-ish doesn't it? Only the SWAC (because SWC was taken), MAAC (because MAC was taken), MEAC, and CAA use the word Athletic in their conference names. The conferences that use Athletic in their name are mostly D-II and below. When I hear athletic conference in your name I tend to think your conference isn't very good at said athletics.

Yeah. But don't forget that the WAC is also a D-I conference with "Athletic" in its name.

Oh yeah that one too, but only making more point clearer.

I know what you mean. If the "American Athletic Conference" wasn't the name, which name would you prefer? I would prefer the Big Metro Conference.

For those asking, the conference intends to emphasize "The American" as its brand, not an acronym.

The American will launch its new website at its new domain July 1.
Twitter handles for The American have not been used to date.

AAC !!! It sounds like Bill the [drugged-out] Cat from Bloom County coughing up a hair ball.

I love the press releases about how frigging exciting this new name is,
and spending millions to some media consulting firm that came up with a gagging noise has "energized the confernece membership".

Maybe they can come up with a logo that blatantly rips off the ACC or some other conference.

American is a wonderful name - but not for a CFB conference. AAC is simply awful.

The AAC is where the Mavs play...SMU/Tulsa/Houston will never win that acronym battle in DFW.

The first AAC (All America Conference) folded after 4 years. It was, however, the birthplace of the Baltimore Colts (I), Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.

Will this one make it for 4 years?

Do the Miami Heat also play in an American Airlines Arena ?

I think a few yars ago, the NBA finals may have been Dallas vs. Miami, and both teams played in an American Airlaines Arena.

And then it was funny, because at the end of the game Dick Stockton would say - "and Tuesday we'll be back here at the American Airlaines Arenas for Game 5, and then if necessary we'll travel to the American Airlines Arena for Game 6,
and then if necessary we'll be back here at the American Airlaines Arena for Game 7....."

Yeah it was the American Airlines Arena in Miami and the American Airlines Center (AAC) in Dallas

"and Tuesday we'll be back here at the American Airlines Center for Game 5, and then if necessary we'll travel to the American Airlines Arena for Game 6..."

No originality or real distinctiveness to the name, yet somewhat predictable with this organization. Sounds like a group of fourth graders would come up with that name without much direction and would not have to pay them. Save some money AAC, get some fifth graders to design and color up a new logo.

Anyway, hope they move forward with a decent future.

This whole thing has been botched over the years with the hiring and firing of Maranatto, to the refusal to let Nova in for football which would have kept the basketball schools in the conference, to the botched attempt at a western wing with Boise and San Diego, and finally to re-approaching Nova again for D1 football instead of the addition of Tulsa thus once again keeping the BB schools in the BE with the new FB all sport replacements.

Villanova addition gives you the following:

FB North: UConn, Nova, Navy, Temple, ECU, Cinn,
FB South: USF, UCF, Memphis, Tulane, SMU, Houston

or

FB East: UConn, Nova, Temple, ECU, UCF, USF
FB West: Cinn, Navy, Memphis, Tulane, SMU, Houston

BB North: UConn, Providence, St Johns, Seton Hall, Nova, Georgetown, Marquette, DePaul
BB South: Cinn, Temple, Memphis, USF, USF, Tulane, SMU, Houston,

FB only: Navy and ECU. ECU to the A-10 for Olympic sports and BB with a ton of BE OOC games thrown their way while they developed their BB program and made it more palatable for the C7 to except them for all sports down the road.

BB schedule goes double round robin to appeal to the C7 with a small amount of cross over games games to appeal to the southern teams. Tournament first round split between MSG and Memphis to accommodation all the teams with the remaining rounds in the Garden to finish the tournament.
