And D2 has some too...NSIC and GLVC have 16, GLIAC will have 16 soon (at 15 and looking), and PSAC has 18

Speaking of D2, the PacWest (Pacific West Conference) at one point had upto 16 teams from 1998-99 to 2000-01, leading to a split and formation of one half, now known as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Also the RMAC has had close to 16 (14 to be exact). Also, the Lone Star and the Gulf South had like 16 teams in the past before a new conference was created in between a few years ago (currently known as the Great American Conference, consisting schools in Oklahoma and Arkansas).

Interesting article but isn't it a little early for the new kid (ODU) to try to dictate conference expansion?

I believe that James Madison (now left out of the question to join the Sun Belt) would be a potential candidate for the C-USA expansion list. With schools like Old Dominion, UNC-Charlotte and Marshall on its region, it'll make a great quadrant within the C-USA East

The commish has already said that geography was one of the reasons expansion is being considered. Adding an Eastern and a Western team does nothing to help the geography. It can be split 7/7 right now, adding one to each side does nothing. Adding two eastern schools would force them to put MTSU and WKU in the west while putting UAB back in the east which is a terrible idea (unless they're trying to push UTEP into the MWC, then by all means continue).

The Mississippi-Alabama border straight up and down will be the divider. The next two will be west of that or they won't do anything and UAB will have to suck it up.

Any chance for UAB to leave C-USA and join another conference, like the AAC (formerly the old Big East)?

Yeah it involves the MWC and ACC going to 16 by taking all AAC schools. Otherwise...no.

If it happens (in the case of the AAC), then UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida and Central Florida should join the ACC, while the western side (mostly Texas schools and Tulsa) should join the MW and the central should join either the Sun Belt or C-USA. Aside from those, Marshall should join either the Big 12 or re-join the MAC (with UMass as a full member [in the East Division] and having Bowling Green State in the West Division to compete with Toledo in the same division).

2--LA Tech, UL Lafayette, Southern Miss, UAB
3--Arkansas St, Middle Tenn, W Kentucky, Marshall
4--ODU, Charlotte, FAU, FIU

Let's assume that these quads would happen, but should be permanently in 2 divisions: Quads 1 and 2 should be the West Division; and Quads 3 and 4 should be the East Division.

James Madison will be the new school added in the east ..... Probably Arkansas State in the West .. That changes up the "quads " just a little .... Should make for an excellent Conference USA .... Should be a much better league than the AAC ....

Considering that the "Group of 5" conferences will only get $1 million per school for up to 12 members and the current C-USA footprint spans from El Paso to Norfolk and Huntington to Miami I wonder if C-USA would consider reorganizing with the Sunbelt to create two 12 member conferences based on geography---

Conference A West Division
New Mexico St
UTEP
UTSA
Texas St
North Texas
Rice

Conference A East Division
Arkansas St
UL Monroe
LA Tech
UL Lafayette
Southern Miss
UAB

Conference B North Division
Marshall
Old Dominion
Appalachian St
Charlotte
W Kentucky
Middle Tenn

Conference B South Division
Georgia St
Georgia Southern
Troy
S Alabama
FIU
FAU

Not only would it be a huge cost cutting measure but it would also create more heated regional rivalries. Schools like LA Tech would have to prove on the gridiron each year that they are better than their upstart neighbors. It would also eliminate ridiculous cross-division games between schools separated by several hundred miles that share no history.

I kinda like the idea if it were possible. What happens to Idaho in this scenario?

I know that what you're doing is football-related, but you forgot about non-football members UALR and UT-Arlington in this mix.
