VMI, ETSU, and Mercer give Iamarino 3 of the 4 he needs to put his conference back together. Who is his 4th? Or is he expecting to lose another member and these 3 adds will give him a 10 member league?

Kennesaw State has been the school floated around as the 4th for awhile now.

UNC-Ashville is only really in the picture if UNC-Greensboro promises to stay and even then I assume they be added at the very last minute just in case.

Still even after those the SoCon has plenty of options from Coastal Carolina to Jacksonville St and Liberty.

And after them there's Presby, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Steton, Jacksonville (FL), and non-fb options North Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, SC Upstate (if worst came to worst), and a slew of upgrades waiting for an invite.

I just don't get it. Jacksonville st, coastal Carolina, and liberty, would have been my first 3 invitees, not the candidates vying for the last spot. Coastal is the natural new travel partner for the citadel, same for j'ville st for Samford. All 3 of those schools offer superior fb programs and coastal and liberty would both say yes in heartbeat in order to get out of the Big South.

Jacksonville St wants FBS so why move if your just going to move again

Coastal is a no go for Furman and Wofford as is Liberty

The new SoCon is VERY Private school oriented. The only reason ETSU gets in is b/c UTC. When in doubt the new SoCon will prefer a private school.

The SoCon could take over men's lacrosse from the Atlantic Sun in the Spring of 2015.

Furman (full member)
Mercer (likely a full member)
VMI (likely a full member)
Jacksonville (affiliate, possible full member)
High Point (affiliate)
Richmond (if not in the Big East - Bellarmine would be a geographically appropriate backup option)

ETSU was also a former SoCon member. They played SoCon fb also. ETSU dropped fb while in SoCon due to struggling to find wins and of course, finances at the time. Johnson City is so close to Knoxville; maybe that also had something to do with it.

Mercer, a Baptist-affiliated school in Macon, was once a big rival with Ga. Southern in bb, before GSU had joined the SoCon and re-inacted fb. Yes, GA Sou. had fb back in the 40s'...

Mercer also has a campus in the Atlanta area for quiet awhile now.

I thought VMI leaving the SoCon was a big mistake. Finally, the return of the VMI/Citadel rivalry in EVERY sport!

Great to see the revival of VMI vs the Citadel. I wonder if Mercer will be expected to play SoCon fb. It also looks like we will a 10 member league with Elon gone. It seems like a comfortable number but I'd prefer the security of 12--and there are plenty of viable options out there.

It will be interesting to see what the fall out will be for the Big South and A-Sun. If the big south doesn't lose Liberty they will be at 11 and need a 12th. The A-Sun will be down to 8 and potentially bleeding more members

SoCon might be happy with the 9/10 alignment. That could work well for them if they add ETSU, VMI, and Mercer as expected.

If i were them I'd add KSU and UNCA too. CAA could come calling again for UNCG, also if JMU goes to SBC or MAC they could hit the SoCon again. At what point do the Big South schools decide it's not worth the move? They may have to go after UNA at that point.

This here is one of the things I find most annoying about expansion/realignment. For some reason no one seems to be able to think two moves ahead. The CAA is going to lose at least JMU. I can't begin to understand how the AEast messed this up. It was teed up better than you could ever hope for and they screwed it up. Them and the SoCon deserve to be raided for this.
