Good you posted this, Freaked.

Swofford's logic that emphasizes population growth is missing placing the point in context. While the ACC has an extensive footprint in a highly populated region, it is also a SHARED footprint. Where the ACC clearly dominates and is concentrated, is in North Carolina and Virginia. Using Swofford's statements, then the Old Big East should have been substained and successful, comparatively, due to the locations of Big East members. Also, the popularity of college sports, particularly fb, is not the same everywhere. PRO sports and tradition do impact in many places.

That is not to say the ACC would exhibit deficient success in a partnership with ESPN to launch an ACC channel. However, population figures aside; the B1G, the SEC, and the PAC12, have the better regions, schools, history, and demographics to better sell their products for the network endeavors.

The ACC is going to look at what the B1G, SEC, & PAC12 receive on the network thrust, and find what they would be offered will show less. I don't see where it will deviate from the pattern displayed from contracts for prior broadcasting rights.

The trick with these conference networks is to force the carriers (cable and satellite companies) to foist the network on ALL of hte subscribers and collect a nice subscriber fee
from all these folks , most of whom would choose NOT to subscribe to the conf. network (for the benefit of watching a few early-season games agains FCS opponents, etc.).

It's a battle. PAC-12 network (they are hooked up with FOX, I believe) is still fighting the battle with certain carriers. LHN is too.

BTN is 1/2 owned by FOX, and they were instrumental in shoving the BTn down the carrier's throats.

SEC may have the most rabid fan following in their region (of any conference) and yet they are partnering with ESPN, to benefit from ESPN's leverage withthe carrierss, to ensure a successful launch.
Seeing this, ACC is thinking along the same lines.

Personally, I foresee 4 conferences with networks (BTN, SEC, PAC, ACC), and then there is the LHN. LHN is a boon to University of Texas, but I think right now it's a money-loser for ESPN.
If rumors are true, The Big 5 conferneces may start the movement toward their own division (it could just be a football division within D1) in May 2014. When the B12 GOR expiration is imminent,
I think those teams will be dispersed among hte other 4 conferences....
