That gets us to 38 bowls, by someone's count.
Will we have 76 bowl eligible teams ? No. Not without a pile of 6-6 squads....

Confirmed 39 (including the NCG)

excluding all the ineligible teams, there would not be enough 6+ wins schools to fill 39 bowls

Looking at last year I did a quick count and got 73 bowl eligible teams plus 4 more who were ineligible but had the record to be bowl eligible. Also, the Big 12 really helped this with 9 of 10 teams eligible. I doubt they'll have too many years when 9 of their 10 teams can pick up 3 conference wins.

And with the Big Ten giving up their FCS games those are 14 more losses FBS teams need to take possibly hurting the number further.

A new bowl has just been approved for the Bahamas, involving some rotation among the MAC, SunBelt, C-USA, maybe AAC. Perhaps it's time to just drop the won/loss criteria and everyone gets to go someplace. Really only a handful of bowls outside the playoffs will end up having any real meaning. More practice time for teams and maybe some fans shall get to go to desirable places.

I submit that only the 4-team playoff has ANY meaning.

However, the other 4 games that occur during semi-final week have a HUGE pay-out.

But as far as who wins them - who cares ? They are "just another game".
ESPN will try to hype them. they may present some interesting match-ups, but the pressure will mount to go to an 8 game plyoff,
and create 4 quarter-final bowls (probaly the same ones in the current rotation) that will have much more intense / relevance.

I think they'd have to consider allowing a top seed to host (or sponsor nearby if stadium isn't 80K) if going to 8, but if they used the bowl I think you're right.

I think ESPN and the big conference would also like to keep an eilte status (like calling them BCS bowls) for a few top tier tie-in bowls even if they go to an 8 team playoff so I think Florida (possibly Orlando/JAX/TB), Texas (Hou/SA), California (SD/SF) would all receive a 2nd bowl and maybe 1 in the North like Detriot, Indy or NYC.

Does anyone else think that eventually there will be a 8 team playoff and the bowls will be something to fill up the week? (I.E. Have the playoffs Saturday and bowls games Tuesday thru Friday) Basically turn the 3 weeks of playoffs into 3 unofficial weeks of football.

Yeah.

Suppose in a given year, the Sugar and Rose get to host semi-finals.
I could see THAT YEAR the Fiesta, Orange, Cotton and Peach (Chick-fil-A) perhaps moving to one week earlier and hosting quarter-final games.

So you will still have NFL on Saturdays and Sundays in there, but if New Years and Christmas fall mid-week,
ESPN would wnat more bowl programming for those mid-week holidays when guys would otherwise be bored after opening presents and putting away their snuggies and Chia-pets.

So that's where some bowl games involving non-top-8 teams enters the picture.

Youtube video of 3/15/2014 of ACC Commissioner Swofford speaking about petitioning the NCAA to allow individual conferences to determine their own conference championship game participants.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOSHaiH7 ... e+youtu.be

If successful, wonder if Notre Dame shall be worked into the equation with the ACC?

You may be onto something SEC !

EITHER:

It's a way to accommodate the Golden Domers

OR

The ACC is contemplating un-zippering the divisions, going to a North-South alignment, but allowing for 1st and 2nd place teams in a strong division play in the CCG.

For the latter to occur, there would have to be some rule such as the 2nd place team having a conference record that is better than the champion of the weak division by a pre-determined number of wins.
Such as a 7-1 2nd place team trumps a 5-3 champ from a weak division.

Something like this might be a way to appease FSU / Miami / Clemson if it was suggested that they all play in the South division.

Five new bowls will debut this season: Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala. (MAC vs. Sun Belt), Detroit Bowl (ACC vs. Big Ten), Bahamas Bowl (rotation of American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt), Miami Beach Bowl (American vs. C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt) and Boca Raton Bowl (rotation of American, C-USA and MAC).
