NJIT's situation is an intriguing one. For a school who just wanted to explore basketball at the top level, it did what was asked of them. However, why programs make the upgrade, and can enter with almost seamless fluidity into a conference speaks to the years of additional work programs have fostering their place with peer institutions.

Some schools simply can't make the jumps they want because they are not a desired partner. Should conference affiliation now be a prerequisite before upgrading? Kind of like it is in FBS football?

Conference affiliation is required before upgrading now; it wasn't when NJIT upgraded in 2006. The problem is that NJIT isn't interested in adding new sports (such as lacrosse) to help them becoming more attractive. America East emphasizes six core sports, one of which is lacrosse. UML added it to get in. Moving up in athletics is a huge investment that NJIT either needs to be willing to make or otherwise should go back to D2.

It's certainly not a landscape for independence anymore.

I wonder if NJIT can sustain the sport. I have a suspicion that BU won't have it for very long if they can't get the financial support base from boosters and other supporters, but that's on the Patriot taking Boston on their word the school was going to offer the sport. It wouldn't surprise me if NJIT puts the sport into existence, gets its NEC or AE invite, then shelves it after a couple of years. Means to an end.

It could be used like how some schools have a bowling team. A way to attract students and to get boosters to send the school more money. Also you have to figure in the potential savings they get if they join a conference..

NJIT men's soccer program just joined the Sun Belt as an associate member. Sun Belt is bringing back men's soccer this year. Good news for NJIT men's soccer but tells me NJIT doesn't feel an AE invite is imminent.

So is NJIT going to be a gypsy?
Some teams in the sun belt, some in the AE some in the summit, and some independent?
Why are they forming a lacrosse team for 2015?
Why are they spending $100 million on a new arena?

To house people who can't get across the GW Bridge - sorry I couldn't resist.

Does anybody remember Gilda Radner's Rosanne Rosannadanna on SNL ?

Every week she got a letter from Mr. Richard Federer from Fort Lee, New Jersey....
suddenly we keep hearing about Fort Lee, NJ on the news, and I'm having these flashbacks....

But I do hope NJIT finds a home in a decent northeastern D-1 conference.

Maybe if Christie Kreme can get NJIT into the AEC, they'll forgive the GW bridge
