Hancock has a do-nothing job, running the CFP for it's 12-year duration.
Any changes could threaten his do-nothing job, so he will stone-wall at every opportunity.

The way we get to 8, is for ESPN / TV networks to throw more money at them than they can refuse.
The P5 schools respond to $$$$$.

The CFP has an arrangement with 6 bowls currently.
It'd be easy for them to accept a rotation where every year, 4 bowls get quarter-finals and the other two get semi-finals.

The one rue obstacle to overcome is when to schedule this additional round of games.... It would run into Christmas or NFL playoffs, potentially.

This is a game being played by the Athletics Department.

They should be flush with money, based on ever-increasing revenue stream from the SEC.

If they are "in the red" it is due to uncontrolled spending on facilities. Since joining the SEC, Mizzou has been splurging on all kinds of things they really don't need.
All in the name of "staying competitive" in the recruiting arena. Just like NFL owners claiming poverty, when they want the public to pay for a new stadium.

I think the Athletics Department wants to be slightly in the red, so they have a "need", when it come to pestering prospective donors.
If the Athletics Department were running a profit, that money could be a target to be "harvested" by the University general fund...
