So much faux-angst over this perceived need for more money to keep up with the Joneses.

Readers need to view these pleas with a critical eye.

All these P5 schools are rolling in a financial TV windfall that has given them huge increases in revenue.

Then they immediately turn around and BLOW IT on stupid sports-related expenditures (committing the money to the athletic department, so the school can't get their hands on any of it for academic-related expenditures).

I believe it was union-champion Samuel Gompers, who was asked what he wanted / what would make him happy, and he simply replied "MORE !"

Yeah, there are more football eyeballs in the SEC ! That translates into more TV revenue dollars. SO WHAT ????
Live within your means and SHUT UP !!

That's a nice editorial, tute79.

Trying to equalize payouts among
P5 schools may make some conferences
take unnecessary risks and over-reach.
They are not equal in numbers, demographics,
sports popularity, weather factors, priorities,
etc.

It is amazing how revenue collected from
so many athletic departments is reinvested
within, including helping to keep Olympic-
type sports afloat. However, big portions
are dumped into bigger facilities and more
modernization, though some of it is not
particularly warranted.

Coaching salaries in fb and bb are getting
out of control to absurd levels. Also, extensions,
paying off fired coaches, attracting expensive
assistants, are all part of eating up distributed
revenue and the profits therein. Few have money
In the black being retained.

They are not policing themselves. These
conferences need to put caps on salaries,
conference sizes, and percentage of revenue
collected that goes directly into the
athletic programs.

Better academic and ethical standards for
recruiting need to be applied for the FBS/P5 levels.
Letting corporate media and major corporate
advertisers buying increasing influence and
control will ultimately do big damage. College
Presidents and Conference Commissioners
are not NFL and NBA billionaire team owners.

I feel the college President often let Athletics run amok.

It is already the case that in 20+ states, the highest-paid public employee is the head football coach at the state's flagship football school.
My opinion (and it IS an opinion) - there is something wrong with that.
It says the Board of Trustees at these institutions associate too much of the college's measure of success to the success of athletics teams (football, and to a lesser extent men's basketball).

The primary mission of these universities is EDUCATION. And so much of this multi-million dollar windfall in FBS TV rights is being spent on things that ONLY benefits athletics and not the mission of education.

OK - if your stadium is an 80- year old dump, maybe invest in fixing it. However UCal-Berkeley and Janet Napolitano now have the school in financial difficulties after irresponsibly committing some $400 million of this football TV revenue stream to an extravagant amount of facility upgrades.
Apparently the Board of Trustees was asleep ! ? ! ?

This is like holding a gun to the head of the Golden Goose and demanding she lay eggs faster and faster and faster to feed some insatiable appetite....

I am a sports junkie like everyone else on this board, but I also run a household and know that you have to live within your means and not spend money irresponsibly.
