World Cup 2014:
MLSsoccer.com's World Cup Draw preview

Image

HOW THE DRAW WORKS

NOTE: Teams from the same region cannot be drawn into the same group except for a maximum of two European teams in any single group.

STEP 1: One European team from Pot 4 will be placed into Pot 2 to ensure 8 teams in each pot

STEP 2: The eight seeds from Pot 1 are assigned groups from Group A through Group H

STEP 3: A ball will be drawn from a special Pot X, featuring the four seeded South American teams. The lone European team in Pot 2 (STEP 1) will be assigned to that South American team's group in order to avoid the possiblity of having three European teams in any one group.

STEP 4: The rest of the Pot 2 teams are randomly drawn into the other seven groups (Note: Chile and Ecuador cannot be drawn into teams with other South American teams).

STEP 5: Pot 3 teams are randomly drawn into the eight groups.

STEP 6: Pot 4 teams are randomly drawn into the eight groups.
•READ: FIFA's official World Cup draw procedures (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/finaldraw/02/23/84/73/131203_finaldrawprocedures_neutral.pdf)

Eight former players representing the eight former World Cup champions -- Cafu (Brazil), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Mario Kempes (Argentina), ex-MLS player Lothar Matthaus (Germany), Alcides Ghiggia (Uruguay), Fernando Hierro (Spain), Zinedine Zidane (France) and Sir Geoff Hurst (England) will help FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke conduct the draw.

MLS referee Mark Geiger,
three other PRO officials selected for 2014 World Cup

Image

Veteran MLS referee Mark Geiger has been selected to take part in this summer's FIFA World Cup, marking the first such call for a US referee in more than a decade.

Geiger will be joined by assistant referees Sean Hurd (USA) and Joe Fletcher (Canada), one of 25 trios and eight “support duos” from 43 countries selected by the FIFA Referee Committee to officiate the action in Brazil.

US referee Eric Boria will also make the trip as one half of a support duo alongside Mexico's Roberto Moreno-Salazar.

Beyond those officials, CONCACAF is also represented by a Salvadoran trio, a Mexican trio and a Central American support duo of Walter Alexander López Castellanos (Guatemala) and Leonel Leal Bermúdez (Costa Rica).

Hundreds arrested in Brazil as protest against World Cup spending grows violent
Image

Bank windows were smashed and fires started in Sao Paolo in a rally against World Cup expenditure, which has exceeded $11 billion. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades, making hundreds of arrests.
Almost a thousand people peacefully took to the streets on Saturday in the south-eastern city to express their discontent over the high government expenditure on the World Cup, which Brazil is going to host in four months.
“There will be no Cup!” and “Cup for the rich, scraps for the poor!” protesters chanted according to AFP.

Brazil 3, Croatia 1: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group A

It may not have been a thing of beauty, but with the weight of an entire nation riding on their backs, Brazil managed to rise to victory over Croatia in the pageantry-filled opener of the 2014 World Cup.

And who else but Brazil's shining star, Neymar, whose two goals – the second on a generously given penalty – on either side of halftime gave the host country a 3-1 decision Thursday night at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo in Group A action, capped by an insurance goal delivered in stoppage time by Oscar.

Australia 2, Netherlands 3: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group B

In one of the most entertaining games of the tournament, the Netherlands produced the seventh come-from-behind win of the World Cup so far, rallying for a 3-2 win over Australia, who had themselves come from a goal down to take a 2-1 lead early in the second half on Wednesday.

With the win, the Netherlands move to 2-0 on the tournament and will await the result of Wednesday's second game to find out if they will qualify for the Round of 16 prior to the final round of group games.

Cameroon 0, Croatia 4: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group A

Croatia jumped back into contention in Group A play at the World Cup on Wednesday, as they defeated Cameroon 4-0 at Arena Amazonia in Manaus. Ivica Olic opened the scoring in the 11th minute, as he slotted home Ivan Perisic's cross. The goal came against the run of play, as Cameroon controlled the opening minutes but couldn't get a shot on target.
